And, finally, a weekly update on the

war on polio......

Greetings Polio Warriors:
• WILD POLIO VIRUS, TYPE 1 - The good news is no new cases of the wild

poliovirus this week.

SIXTY-TWO - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Afghanistan.
ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTEEN – The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Malawi.
ONE YEAR AND 48 DAYS - The number of days since the last case of WPV1

occurred in Pakistan.
ONE - The total number of cases of WPV1 that has occurred in 2022 year-to-

date (In Afghanistan on January 14th).
SIX - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2021 (1 in Pakistan, 1 in Malawi and 4 in Afghanistan).
ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2020.

Also, once again, there were no new cases of wild Positive Environmental Samples (ES) reported as well. So the total count of wild ES for 2022 remains at zero, and for the year 2021 remains at 66 (65 in Pakistan and 1 in Afghanistan), with the last ES discovered in Pakistan on December 6th.

CIRCULATING VACCINE-DERIVED POLIO - Our other battlefront in the war on polio, the circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio (cVDPV) reported 4 cases this last week, however one actually occurred in 2021. This means we ended the 2021 year with 638 cases vs the 637 reported last week, and the 2022 count is now 9, compared to 166 last year at this time, continuing our big year over year improvement in 2022 numbers.

And another positive piece of news. There were no Positive Environmental samples (ES) of the vaccine-derived polio reported this last week as well.

AGAINST POLIO IN MALAWI - In response to the
recent case of Wild Polio Type 1 (WPV1) that
emerged in Malawi on November 19th of last year,
but only just reported last month, UNICEF, one of
Rotary’s partners in GPEI (Global Polio Eradication
Initiative), has announced a mass immunization
campaign to vaccinate 2.9 million children under the
age of 5. It takes multiple doses of the polio vaccine to achieve full immunization against polio, and they are planning to administer 4 rounds of the vaccine to all children. They will procure an initial 6.9 million polio vaccine doses to start the campaign in the upcoming weeks. To supplement the effort, UNICEF is also installing 223 new vaccine refrigerators, repairing 51 old ones, distributing 200 vaccine carriers and 38 cold boxes to health centers across the country in preparation for this campaign. For the full story, click here.

• DENMARK SENDS 150,000 POLIO VACCINES TO POLAND - Of concern to many is the abrupt interruption of the vaccination campaign that was taking place in Ukraine to combat the recent outbreak, when the war started. So it was heartening to hear that, according to Anette Lowert, EPNC for Region 19 (Zone 18 Denmark), the Danish Ministry reported that Poland asked for polio vaccines (through the European Union) for Ukrainian refugees passing through the border to Poland. Denmark responded by sending 150,000 doses with more to follow. Thank you

Denmark 😊 .
